Are you a passionate and active South African poet looking for an opportunity to immerse yourself in a creative and inspiring environment? If so, we invite you to apply for the Poetry Retreat organized by Hear My Voice, a Non-Profit Organization dedicated to supporting spoken word artists and poets through various cultural exchange programs, workshops, and literature initiatives. This initiative coincides with Hear My Voice's International Poetry Residency taking place from 30 August to 11 September 2023 made possible through the support of the Diplomatic Representation Of Flanders In Southern Africa and in partnership with the Open Book Festival, FARMHOUSE 58 and Göteborgs Litteraturhus and Flanders Literature.
About the Retreat:
This will be the second Poetry Retreat hosted in Cape Town by Hear My Voice, following successful retreats in Gauteng and Mpumalanga. The organization has been actively fostering the growth of poetry in South Africa since 2016, supporting hundreds of artists with its diverse range of literary programs.
Who Can Apply:
The retreat is open to all active South African poets from across the country, representing the rich tapestry of voices that make up our nation's poetic landscape.
Selection Process:
Out of the applications received, four poets will be selected to participate in the retreat. To apply, interested poets need to complete a simple application form, providing their personal details, a biography, and a motivation explaining why they wish to be part of the retreat.
Application Deadline:
Applications open Monday 7 August 2023 and the closing date for all applications is Friday, 18 August 2023. Applicants are encouraged to submit their forms well before the deadline to ensure consideration.
Retreat Dates:
The Poetry Retreat will take place from 5 September to 11 September, 2023, in the beautiful city of Cape Town. all costs pertaining to participation in the retreat will be covered by Hear My Voice.
Special Features:
As part of the retreat experience, selected poets will also have the unique opportunity to be featured at this year's Open Book Festival, one of South Africa's largest and most prestigious literary events. This platform will allow poets to share their work with a broader audience and connect with fellow literature enthusiasts.
International Guests:
Joining the retreat will be esteemed poets Lisette Ma Neza from Flanders, Belgium, and Burcu Sahin from Sweden. Their presence will add an international dimension to the retreat, offering participants a chance to engage with global voices and build cross-cultural connections.
